Las recientes sentencias en Prairieland y los cargos por conspiración en Minnesota nos tienen reflexionando sobre los sacrificios y la necesidad de crear fanzines, así como otras formas de agitación y educación popular en estos tiempos. Seguimos creando y distribuyendo medios accesibles que abordan las condiciones de la clase trabajadora y nos educamos sobre el riesgo inminente que implica desafiar las narrativas dominantes.
The recent Prairieland convictions and Minnesota indictments have us reflecting on both the sacrifices and necessity for zine-making and other forms of agitation and popular education in these times. We continue to create and distribute accessible media that speaks to the conditions of the working class and we are educating ourselves about the growing/changing risk of disrupting dominant narratives.

Los primeros paquetes de arte y medios para nuestros suscriptores de La Marejada | The Upswell estarán disponibles muy pronto e incluirán un ejemplar nuevo y actualizado del fanzine, Soberanía en la cocina. Creado en 2018, este fanzine se desarrolló a través del intercambio con organizadores y artistas de los Centros de Apoyo Mutuo (CAM), que surgieron en todo el archipiélago de Puerto Rico, tras el huracán María. El fanzine comparte consejos, trucos y guías (paso a paso) para planificar y cocinar en comunidad ante situaciones de desastre. El número 2, actualmente en producción, amplía el contenido con nuevas ilustraciones, recetas, consejos sobre compostaje a pequeña escala y huertos caseros, entre otras. The first art and media packets for our La Marejada | The Upswell subscribers are coming soon and will include a new and updated issue of the zine, Soberanía en la Cocina. This zine, created in 2018, was developed in Puerto Rico while exchanging with organizers and artists of the Centros de Apoyo Mutuo (CAMs) which emerged throughout the archipelago after Hurricane María. The zine shares tips, tricks and step-by-step guides for planning and cooking with your community in disaster situations. Issue 2, currently in production, expands on the content from the first issue and features new artwork, recipes, small scale composting and home gardening tips, and more. Nuestro artista en residencia, Agustín “Tini” Muñoz Ríos, nos comparte su proceso de creación para esta pieza de teatro de títeres que relata una historia personal familiar en el mundo del cañaveral para eso del siglo XX. Luego de trabajar varios prototipos, nos muestra dos perfiles de los fondos que ambientarán dos escenas, indicando la diferencia drástica del panorama ambiental entre la costa y la montaña que nuestres jíbares navegaron para trabajar. Esta pieza tiene la intención de estar lista para presentarse a principios del próximo año y sabemos desde ya que la musicalidad destacará en esta otra faceta del gran artista que es nuestro compañero, Tini. El ángel que ven al final y que es parte del mundo mágico oral de su abuelita continuará manifestándose en los próximos meses para que así como es, sea.
Our artist-in-residence, Agustín “Tini” Muñoz Ríos, shares his creative process for this puppet theater piece, a personal family story set in the world of the sugarcane fields around the turn of the 20th century. After working on several prototypes, he shows us two sketches of the backdrops that will set the scene for two different settings, highlighting the stark contrast in the landscape between the coast and the mountains that our jíbares traversed to get to work. This piece is intended to be ready for performance early next year, and we already know that musicality will take center stage in this other facet of the great artist that is our colleague, Tini. The angel you see at the end—which is part of his grandmother’s magical oral tradition—will continue to manifest in the coming months so that it may be exactly as it is.
En mayo celebramos el vigésimo aniversario de Papel Machete estrenando, El Gran Desencajonamiento, una obra corta sobre trabajadores que desarrollan conciencia de clase y toman los medios de producción neutralizando al jefe, un ‘influencer’ contratado para vender a Puerto Rico a los colonizadores. La producción juntó artistas veteranos de Papel Machete y jóvenes de nuestro proyecto JUVENTUDES en un proceso colaborativo de creación.
Como parte del aniversario, invitamos a integrantes que participaron del proyecto —en Puerto Rico y en la diáspora— a compartir algunas reflexiones y anécdotas de su experiencia con Papel Machete y cómo marcó sus vidas. Los siguientes videos son testimonio de un grupo de jóvenes de clase trabajadora que, con poca experiencia formal en teatro, construyó un cuerpo de trabajo que abarca más de dos décadas y, lo que es más importante, la razón por la cual decidieron hacerlo.

In May, we celebrated Papel Machete’s 20th anniversary with the premiere of El Gran Desencajonamiento, a short play about workers who develop class consciousness and seize the means of production after neutralizing their boss—an influencer hired to sell Puerto Rico to colonizers. The production brought together veteran Papel Machete artists and young artists from our JUVENTUDES project in a collaborative storytelling process.
As part of the anniversary, we also invited former members—both in Puerto Rico and throughout the diaspora—to share reflections and anecdotes about how their experience with Papel Machete shaped their lives. The videos that follow testify to how a group of working class young people, with little formal theater experience, built a body of work spanning more than two decades—and, more importantly, why they chose to do so.
